Categories of Fiber Optic Sensors

Fiber optic sensors are categorized based on sensing principle, sensor location, light interaction, and configuration, including intrinsic, extrinsic, hybrid, point, distributed, and wavelength-based types.

Based on Sensor Location

  • Intrinsic Sensors: The optical fiber itself acts as the sensing element. Physical changes such as strain, temperature, or pressure directly affect the light traveling within the fiber, allowing the fiber to measure the quantity without external transducers .
  • Extrinsic Sensors: The fiber transmits light to and from an external sensing element. The fiber is not affected by the measurand; instead, the modulation occurs outside the fiber, and the fiber carries the signal to the detector .
  • Hybrid Sensors: Combine features of intrinsic and extrinsic sensors, where the fiber both interacts with the measurand and transmits light to an external element .

Based on Measurement Scope

  • Point Sensors: Measure parameters at discrete locations along the fiber. Ideal for localized monitoring .
  • Integral Sensors: Gather information over a segment of the fiber, providing an average measurement along that length .
  • Distributed Sensors: Measure continuously along the entire fiber length, enabling monitoring over large distances, such as structural health monitoring of bridges or pipelines .

Based on Light Interaction

  • Intensity-Based Sensors: Detect changes in light intensity caused by external factors like bending, vibration, or pressure. Simple and cost-effective but sensitive to losses in the fiber .
  • Phase-Based Sensors: Measure phase shifts in the light signal due to environmental changes, useful for precise strain or vibration detection .
  • Wavelength-Based Sensors: Include Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs), which reflect specific wavelengths that shift in response to strain or temperature, providing highly accurate measurements .
  • Polarization-Based Sensors: Detect changes in light polarization caused by external influences, suitable for specialized applications .

Based on Sensor Configuration

  • Thru-Beam Type: Uses separate transmitter and receiver fibers, often for object detection .
  • Reflective Type: Single unit with fibers arranged parallel, coaxial, or separate for transmitter and receiver, commonly used in compact or space-limited installations . These categories allow fiber optic sensors to be tailored for diverse applications, including structural health monitoring, industrial process control, aerospace, and medical instrumentation, leveraging their immunity to electromagnetic interference and ability to operate in harsh environments .
