Fiber optic pigtails follow the TIA-598-C color standard, using a 12-color sequence to identify individual fibers for accurate splicing and termination.

Standard Fiber Color Sequence

Fiber optic pigtails are color-coded to help technicians identify each fiber quickly and avoid errors during splicing or termination. The TIA-598-C standard defines the following 12-color sequence for fibers 1–12:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose (Pink)
  12. Aqua For singlemode fibers, the pigtail jacket is typically yellow, while multimode fibers use jackets in orange (OM1/OM2), aqua (OM3/OM4), or lime (OM5) to indicate fiber type .

Multi-Fiber Cables and MPO Connectors

For cables with more than 12 fibers, the 12-color sequence repeats inside each buffer tube. For example, in a 48-fiber cable:

  • Tube 1: Fibers 1–12 (standard 12 colors)
  • Tube 2: Fibers 13–24 (repeat 12 colors, sometimes with a stripe to differentiate)
  • Tube 3: Fibers 25–36 (repeat with two stripes)
  • Tube 4: Fibers 37–48 (repeat with three stripes) For 16-fiber MPO connectors, additional colors are used:
  • 13: Olive
  • 14: Magenta
  • 15: Tan
  • 16: Lime This ensures each fiber is uniquely identifiable within high-density cables .

Practical Use in Pigtails

A fiber optic pigtail has a factory-terminated connector on one end and a bare fiber on the other for splicing into a trunk cable. The color coding allows technicians to:

  • Match fibers correctly in splice trays
  • Maintain polarity in multi-fiber arrays
  • Reduce human errors during installation and maintenance For example, Fiber #34 in a high-count cable would be the Violet fiber in the Green tube using the tube-and-fiber system .
