Relay protection is a general term for which two things

Relay protection generally refers to the measurement (or sensing) of abnormal electrical conditions and the control action to isolate faults.

Relay protection in power systems involves two main components: 1. Measurement or Sensing: Protective relays continuously monitor electrical quantities such as current, voltage, frequency, and phase angle. They detect abnormal conditions like overcurrent, overvoltage, under-frequency, or earth faults by comparing measured values to preset thresholds or settings, often using instrument transformers for safe and manageable connections to high-voltage circuits . 2. Control or Tripping Action: Once a fault is detected, the relay initiates a control action, typically sending a trip signal to a circuit breaker. This isolates the faulty section from the healthy system, preventing equipment damage, maintaining system stability, and limiting outages. The relay does not interrupt current directly but acts as a decision-making device to operate the breaker . These two aspects—detection of abnormal conditions and initiation of protective action—form the core of relay protection, ensuring safe and reliable operation of electrical power systems.
