How to connect and insert the fiber optic drop cable into the fiber distribution box

Connecting a fiber optic drop cable to a distribution box involves introducing the cable, securing it, and terminating it using adapters or splice-on connectors while maintaining proper bend radius and cable management.

Step 1: Prepare the Distribution Box

Install the fiber optic distribution box in its designated location, either on a wall, pole, or rack. Ensure the box is oriented correctly and securely mounted using brackets or screws. Open the front panel or splice tray to allow access for cable routing and termination .

Step 2: Introduce the Fiber Drop Cable

Feed the fiber drop cable into the distribution box through the designated cable inlet. Use a grommet or sealing component to secure the cable and prevent movement. Ensure the cable length inside the box is sufficient to allow the front panel or tray to be fully extended without tension on the fiber .

Step 3: Secure the Cable

Use cable ties or Velcro straps to fix the main trunk of the fiber cable inside the box. Maintain proper bend radius to avoid fiber damage. Movable cable ties can be used for flexible routing, and the cable should be routed along the designated paths or bend radius clips provided in the box .

Step 4: Terminate the Fiber

Using Pre-Terminated Cables:

  • Inspect the connectors for debris or scratches and clean with a dry-cassette cleaner or microscope pen.
  • Align and insert the connectors into the corresponding adapters on the distribution box.
  • Engage retention clips or boots to secure the connection.
  • Torque threaded connectors (e.g., FC) to the recommended specification (0.5 N·m), .

Using Splice-On Connectors or Pigtails:

  • Strip the fiber jacket and cleave the fiber according to manufacturer instructions.
  • Perform fusion or mechanical splicing to connect the drop cable to pigtails or adapters.
  • Place the spliced fiber in the splice tray and secure with holders or heat-shrink protection.
  • Close the splice tray cover to protect the fibers from mechanical impact .

Step 5: Manage Excess Fiber

Create service loops or slack storage inside the box to accommodate future maintenance or panel movement. Ensure loops do not exceed the minimum bend radius and are neatly organized to prevent stress on the fibers .

Step 6: Final Checks

  • Verify that all connections are secure and properly labeled.
  • Test the fiber for continuity and signal loss using an optical power meter or OTDR.
  • Close the distribution box and ensure it is sealed against environmental factors if outdoors . By following these steps, the fiber drop cable can be safely and efficiently connected to the distribution box, ensuring reliable FTTH service and minimizing the risk of fiber damage.
