How to assemble a fiber optic sensor

Fiber optic sensors can be assembled using surface bonding, tape attachment, or embedment in materials like concrete and composites, with careful adhesive selection and protective measures ensuring accurate and durable sensing.

Surface Bonding

Surface bonding is one of the most common methods for installing fiber optic sensors. The process involves:

  • Surface Preparation: Clean, abrade, and condition the surface to ensure strong adhesion, similar to standard strain gauge installation procedures .
  • Adhesive Selection: Epoxies such as M-Bond 200 or AE-10 are commonly used for strong, durable bonds .
  • Curing and Protection: After adhesive curing, a protective layer such as RTV silicone can be applied to shield the fiber from environmental effects like moisture and temperature fluctuations . This method is suitable for metallic, composite, or smooth surfaces and provides high-fidelity strain measurements.

Tape Attachment

For temporary or non-critical applications, double-sided tape can be used to fix the fiber to a surface. While this method is faster and simpler, it is less reliable than adhesive bonding, as environmental factors like humidity and temperature can cause tape failure .

Embedment in Materials
