Optical Power Meter OPM200
The OPM200 optical power meter was developed for precise high-speed measurement of optical power in the µW to mW range.
An Optical Power Meter (OPM) measures the strength of light transmitted through fiber optic cables, allowing technicians to assess signal quality, detect losses, and verify network performance . It uses a photodiode sensor to convert incoming light into an electrical current, which is then displayed as a power reading. OPMs are commonly used in the installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of fiber optic networks .
OPMs typically display power in decibel-milliwatts (dBm), which is a logarithmic scale comparing the measured power to a reference of 1 milliwatt . Positive dBm values indicate higher power, while negative values indicate weaker signals. For example, -10 dBm represents a moderate signal, whereas -25 dBm may indicate a poor connection or damaged fiber .
Since optical power readings are wavelength-dependent, the OPM must be set to match the wavelength of the light source being tested. Common wavelengths include 850 nm and 1300 nm for multimode fibers, and 1310 nm and 1550 nm for single-mode fibers . Correct wavelength selection ensures accurate measurements and prevents errors caused by spurious light.
To use an OPM effectively:
