Optical cables are difficult to strip because they have multiple protective layers that require precise, careful removal to avoid damaging the delicate glass fiber inside.

Multi-Layer Construction

Fiber optic cables typically consist of several layers: an outer jacket, strength members like aramid yarn, buffer coatings, and the acrylate coating directly protecting the glass fiber . Each layer serves a specific purpose, such as mechanical protection, tensile strength, or insulation. Stripping must be done progressively, layer by layer, because removing all layers at once risks nicking or scratching the fiber, which can lead to signal loss or catastrophic failure .

Precision and Fragility

The glass core of an optical fiber is extremely thin, usually 125 µm in diameter, and is coated with polymer layers that can be as small as 200–250 µm .   • Holding the stripper at the correct angle (typically 45 degrees) to reduce stress on the fiber .
  • Cleaning the fiber with alcohol wipes or specialized cleaners after stripping to remove debris .
  • Inspecting the cleaved fiber end with a microscope or visual fault locator to ensure it is smooth and defect-free .
