How to connect the power supply to the fiber optic AP panel

You can connect a power supply to a fiber optic panel using powered fiber solutions, SFP transceivers, or composite fiber/copper cabling to deliver both data and power to remote devices.

Using SFP Transceivers

Many modern fiber optic panels support SFP (small form-factor pluggable) ports that allow power and data to pass through a single interface. To connect a power supply:

  • Insert a compatible SFP transceiver into the panel's SFP port.
  • Connect the power supply to the SFP module, which provides the necessary voltage to the transceiver.
  • This setup allows a single power supply to support multiple optical standards and power levels by swapping inexpensive SFPs for different applications, such as EPON or DOCSIS provisioning systems .

Powered Fiber Cable Systems

For longer distances or higher power requirements, powered fiber cable systems combine fiber-optic data with low-voltage DC power over a single cable. Steps include:

  • Use a composite cable that integrates singlemode fiber with copper conductors.
  • Connect the DC power source to the copper conductors at the panel or power distribution unit.
  • Connect the fiber strands to the panel for data transmission.
  • This allows powering remote devices like IP cameras, PoE extenders, or remote OLTs without additional AC outlets .

PoE over Fiber

If deploying Power over Ethernet (PoE) over fiber:

  • Use a media converter or PoE extender at the remote end to convert fiber back to Ethernet and inject power to the device.
  • Ensure the power supply provides the correct voltage and wattage for the remote device, considering distance and voltage drop limitations.
  • This method is ideal for installations exceeding 100 meters, where standard Ethernet cannot deliver sufficient power .

Remote Fiber Power Systems

For outdoor or remote OLTs:

  • Use a fiber power supply with integrated SFP port for remote management.
  • Combine with battery backup or UPS to maintain power during outages.
  • Connect the fiber panel directly to the SFP port on the power supply for both monitoring and powering remote network elements .

Safety and Standards

  • Follow NEC 725/830 and IEC 60950-21 / IEC 62368-1 guidelines for touch-safe low-voltage power over fiber.
  • Ensure proper wire gauge for copper conductors in composite cables to meet distance and wattage requirements.
  • Verify that the power supply and panel are compatible with the intended optical standard and device load. By using SFP-based connections, powered fiber cables, or PoE over fiber extenders, you can efficiently deliver both data and power to devices connected to a fiber optic panel while maintaining safety and distance performance.
