Correct Use of Cold Joints

Cold joints are created by properly preparing the existing concrete surface, applying a bonding agent, and pouring fresh concrete to ensure a strong, durable connection.

Step 1: Identify and Plan the Joint

Cold joints occur when fresh concrete is poured against partially hardened concrete, often due to delays or staged pours. Plan the location of joints in advance, especially in slabs, beams, or walls, to minimize structural weaknesses and ensure proper load transfer .

Step 2: Prepare the Existing Concrete Surface

  • Depth of preparation: Typically 1/4 inch (6 mm) minimum, extending into the hardened concrete up to 1-2 inches depending on slab thickness .

  • Apply the bonding agent to both the old and new concrete surfaces to enhance adhesion and reduce the risk of cracks .

Step 4: Place the Fresh Concrete

  • Pour fresh concrete against the prepared surface promptly to ensure proper bonding .
  • Use a high-strength, shrinkage-compensating concrete mix or specialized repair mortar for durability .
  • Consolidate the concrete using vibrators to eliminate air pockets and ensure full contact with the old surface .

  • Inspect the joint for visible cracks, color differences, or weak bonding .
  • If necessary, repair using epoxy injection, overlay, or saw-cut and re-pour techniques to restore structural integrity .
  • Apply sealants or waterproof coatings to prevent water infiltration and long-term damage .
