Properly fixing optical cables in an ODF involves securing the cable at entry points, maintaining bend radius, routing fibers through splice trays, and using cable management accessories to prevent stress and signal loss.

Cable Entry and Securing

Optical cables are typically fed into the ODF from the top via racks or from the bottom through floor openings. At the entry point, the cable sheath, central strength member, Kevlar, and tubes are secured using breakout plates or horizontal/vertical fixing plates in the rack cabinet. This ensures the cable is held firmly before stripping the sheath and directing the individual PVC tubes into the splice trays or protective tubes . For microducts or micro cables, additional racks with special holders near the ODF provide vertical routing and fixing .

Routing and Splice Tray Management

Once the cable is fixed at the entry, fibers are routed into splice trays, which protect splices and maintain the proper bend radius. Fibers should be arranged in bundles (commonly 12 or 24 fibers per tube) and color-coded according to ISO, DIN, or TIA standards for easy identification . Maintaining the correct bend radius is critical to prevent signal attenuation or fiber breakage .

Cable Protection and Organization

Before routing, the stripped fibers are protected using protection connectors or bare fiber protection tubes. After splicing to pigtails, fibers are terminated at adapters in the ODF. Excess patch cords should be organized using zip ties, Velcro straps, or cable guides to maintain a neat setup and prevent mechanical stress . Modular patch panels and cable management rings can be used to scale the system and keep fibers accessible for maintenance .
