Which type of pigtail should I use for OLT

For OLT connections, a single-mode LC fiber pigtail with UPC or APC polish is typically recommended for optimal performance.

Fiber Type

OLT ports generally use single-mode fiber for long-distance transmission in FTTH or PON networks. Single-mode pigtails ensure minimal signal loss and high-speed data transmission, whereas multimode fibers are more suitable for short-distance LAN or data center applications .

Connector Type

The most common connector for OLTs is LC (Lucent Connector) due to its compact 1.25mm ferrule, push-pull mechanism, and high port density, which is ideal for high-density ODF panels and OLT chassis . SC connectors are also used in some legacy systems, but LC is preferred for modern deployments.

Polish Type

  • UPC (Ultra Physical Contact): Provides low insertion loss and is widely used in standard OLT connections.
  • APC (Angled Physical Contact): Offers higher return loss and is recommended for PON networks where back reflection must be minimized, such as GPON or EPON systems .

Cable Structure

  • Indoor pigtails: Lightweight and flexible, suitable for protected environments like ODF panels or fiber termination boxes.
  • Armored or waterproof pigtails: Recommended if the pigtail may be exposed to mechanical stress, moisture, or outdoor conditions .

Fiber Count

  • Simplex pigtails: One fiber per connector, commonly used for OLT ports.
  • Duplex pigtails: Two fibers per connector, used when bidirectional communication requires separate transmit and receive fibers .

Practical Recommendation

For most OLT installations in FTTH networks:

  • Single-mode LC pigtail
  • UPC polish for standard GPON/EPON, or APC polish for high-return-loss-sensitive applications
  • Indoor 900µm buffered fiber for protected ODF environments
  • Length: Typically 1–3 meters to allow easy routing from the OLT to the splice tray . Selecting the correct pigtail ensures low insertion loss, high return loss, and reliable long-term network performance, reducing the risk of signal degradation and maintenance issues.
