How to drill holes in a cable tray

Drilling holes for cable trays involves careful planning, marking support points, using the correct drill and anchors, and ensuring proper alignment and safety.

Step 1: Plan and Mark the Route

Before drilling, determine the cable tray path along walls, ceilings, or floors. Use a chalk line or laser level to mark the route and identify support points at standard intervals, typically every 1.5 to 2 meters, depending on the tray type and load capacity . Also, mark locations for bends, tees, or elevation changes.

Step 2: Select the Right Tools

  • Power drill or hammer drill (for concrete or masonry)
  • Drill bits suitable for the material (masonry, metal, or wood)
  • Anchors: expansion bolts for concrete, wall plugs for drywall
  • Measuring tape, level, and pencil for accurate marking
  • Safety gear: gloves, safety glasses, and hard hat

Step 3: Drill the Holes

  1. Measure and mark the exact points for supports.
  2. Check alignment with a level to ensure brackets or hangers will be horizontal.
  3. Drill pilot holes first if necessary, then the final hole size according to the anchor specifications.
  4. For concrete ceilings, use a hammer drill with masonry bits; for metal or wood, use standard drill bits .

Step 4: Install Anchors and Supports

  • Insert drop-in anchors or wall plugs into the drilled holes.
  • Attach cantilever brackets, Unistrut channels, or trapeze hangers using threaded rods, nuts, and washers.
  • Ensure all supports are level and secure before placing the cable tray .

Step 5: Safety and Finishing

  • Deburr any sharp edges around drilled holes to prevent cable damage.
  • Double-check that all supports are firmly anchored and aligned.
  • Maintain proper spacing and load limits according to manufacturer specifications and local electrical codes . By following these steps, you can safely and accurately drill holes for cable trays, ensuring a stable and compliant installation.
