3. Based on Material Composition

  • Plastic Optical Fiber (POF): Both core and cladding are made of plastic. These fibers are flexible, lightweight, and inexpensive but have higher attenuation, making them suitable for short-distance applications (50–200 meters) and low data rates .
  • Glass Core with Plastic Cladding (PCS): Combines a glass core with a plastic cladding, offering lower attenuation than all-plastic fibers and better resistance to radiation, often used in specialized or military applications .
  • All-Glass Fiber: Both core and cladding are made of glass, providing the lowest attenuation and highest bandwidth, ideal for long-distance and high-speed communication networks .
