Color order of optical fibers in optical cables

The standard color order for optical fiber cables follows the TIA/EIA-598-C 12-color sequence: Blue, Orange, Green, Brown, Slate, White, Red, Black, Yellow, Violet, Rose, Aqua.

Standard 12-Color Sequence

For individual fibers in a cable, the TIA/EIA-598-C standard specifies the following 12-color order for easy identification during installation, splicing, and maintenance:

  1. Blue
  2. Orange
  3. Green
  4. Brown
  5. Slate (Gray)
  6. White
  7. Red
  8. Black
  9. Yellow
  10. Violet
  11. Rose (Pink)
  12. Aqua (Light Blue) This sequence repeats for cables with more than 12 fibers, with additional markings such as stripes or binder rings to distinguish repeated sets .

High-Count Fiber Cables

For cables exceeding 12 fibers (e.g., 24, 48, 96, 144 fibers), fibers are typically organized into tubes or bundles, each containing up to 12 fibers. The tube itself may be color-coded using the same 12-color sequence to identify the group, while the fibers inside follow the standard 12-color order. For example, Fiber #34 in a 48-fiber cable would be the 10th fiber (Violet) in the 3rd tube (Green) if using the tube-and-fiber system .

MPO and Ribbon Cable Exceptions

For 16-fiber MPO connectors or certain high-density ribbon cables, a 16-color sequence is sometimes used: 13. Olive 14. Magenta 15. Tan 16. Lime This sequence is often applied in European standards (DIN) or specialized ribbon cables .

Loose-Tube Cable Color Coding

In loose-tube outdoor cables, each tube contains fibers following the 12-color sequence, and the tubes themselves are color-coded for identification. If the number of tubes exceeds 12, buffer tube stripes or binders are used to differentiate repeated tube colors .
