How to configure a gateway aggregation switch

To configure an aggregation switch as a gateway, you need to set up VLANs, Layer 3 interfaces with IP addresses, routing, DHCP, and optionally link aggregation for redundancy and performance.

Step 1: Prepare the Switch Stack

Before configuring the gateway, ensure that aggregation switches are stacked properly to function as a single logical unit. Verify that all switches are factory default, connected via reserved auto-stacking ports in a ring topology, and that the stack conductor is identified. Use the mode button to assign the conductor and join members to the stack, confirming operational status via LED indicators (solid green for active members) .

Step 2: Configure VLANs

  • Avoid using VLAN 1 as a management or service VLAN.
  • Create separate VLANs for management and service traffic to prevent service interruptions.
  • Assign interfaces to VLANs based on actual service requirements, ensuring that downstream packets are properly forwarded .

Step 3: Configure Layer 3 Interfaces

  • Assign IP addresses to the Layer 3 interfaces on the aggregation switch.
  • Configure routing to ensure connectivity between VLANs and upstream networks.
  • If using VRRP or HSB for high availability, configure these protocols on the aggregation switch or connected ACs to provide gateway redundancy .

Step 4: Configure DHCP

  • Enable DHCP on the aggregation switch to assign IP addresses to wired clients, APs, and wireless clients.
  • Ensure DHCP scopes match the VLANs and IP subnets configured on the switch .

Step 5: Configure Link Aggregation (Optional)

  • For uplinks or high-traffic links, configure Link Aggregation Groups (LAGs) using LACP for dynamic negotiation and failover.
  • Ensure both ends of the link support the same aggregation protocol.
  • Configure the aggregation mode and distribution algorithm to optimize traffic load and redundancy .

Step 6: Configure Wireless Forwarding (if applicable)

  • In direct forwarding mode, service packets from APs are forwarded directly to the upper-layer network.
  • Ensure the service VLAN includes the network between APs and the upper-layer network, and the management VLAN includes the network between ACs and APs .

Step 7: Verify Configuration

  • Test connectivity for all VLANs and ensure DHCP is functioning.
  • Confirm that VRRP/HSB failover works as expected.
  • Check that aggregated links are active and distributing traffic correctly. By following these steps, the aggregation switch will function as a reliable Layer 3 gateway, providing routing, DHCP, and high availability for both wired and wireless clients while maintaining proper VLAN separation and network performance.
