Configuration of switch optical ports and ports

Switch ports, whether optical or Ethernet, can be configured by enabling the port, setting VLANs, adjusting speed/duplex, and applying traffic or service profiles for proper network segmentation.

Accessing the Switch

  1. Connect your computer to the switch using an Ethernet cable and ensure your IP address is in the same subnet as the switch .
  2. Log in via a terminal client (e.g., PuTTY) using the switch's IP address .
  3. Enter privileged EXEC mode and then global configuration mode to begin port configuration .

Enabling and Describing Ports

  • By default, most switch ports are enabled, but some may be administratively down for security reasons .
  • Use the shutdown command to disable a port and no shutdown to enable it .

Configuring VLANs

  • Ensure the port is fiber-optic capable (SFP/SFP+ module installed) and configure the correct speed and duplex mode .
  • Create a dedicated VLAN for optical traffic if needed, especially for GPON or OLT connections .
  • Map user VLANs to service VLANs (SVLAN) for traffic separation, using transparent tag action to avoid double tagging issues .

Speed, Duplex, and PoE Settings

  • Configure port speed using speed auto or specify a fixed rate (e.g., 1000 Mbps) depending on the connected device .
  • Set duplex mode to full or auto to match the peer device .
  • Enable PoE if the port powers devices like IP phones or access points .

Saving Configuration

  • After configuration, save the running configuration to startup configuration to retain settings after a reboot: copy running-config startup-config .

Best Practices

  • Standardize port naming and descriptions for easier troubleshooting .
  • Verify physical port numbering and module layout to avoid misconfiguration .
  • Ensure VLAN and trunk settings are consistent across connected devices to prevent traffic drops .
  • Apply traffic profiles or QoS settings for services like Internet, VoIP, and IPTV to optimize bandwidth usage . By following these steps, both optical and Ethernet ports on a switch can be properly configured for secure, efficient, and reliable network operation.
