Testing Procedures

Pigtail fibers must be tested using an Optical Time Domain Reflectometer (OTDR) in conjunction with a 1-km launch reel to accurately measure connector loss, back reflectance, and adjacent splice loss on short spans (15–30 meters from the distribution panel) . Long patch cords or other adaptations are not acceptable for pigtail testing. The OTDR must be set with the correct index of refraction for the fiber type, and the backscatter coefficient must match the fiber (e.g., –83 for SMF-28, –80 for Corning LEAF) .

Splice Loss Criteria

  • Maximum acceptable splice loss: 0.30 dB per splice.
  • If the loss exceeds 0.30 dB, the splice must be re-done.
  • After three attempts, the maximum allowable loss is 0.35 dB.
  • If two additional re-splicing attempts fail to achieve ≤0.30 dB, the splice is marked out of specification (OOS) .

Equipment and Calibration

  • Optical Power Meter and Laser Light Source must be used to verify continuity and power loss at 1310 nm and 1550 nm wavelengths.
  • Power meters must be calibrated before testing, with the calibration reference documented for each span .
