Installation process of ordinary optical cables

Proper installation of optical cables involves careful handling, route planning, controlled laying, protection, and post-installation testing to ensure signal integrity and cable longevity.

Planning and Preparation

Before installation, plan the cable route and evaluate environmental conditions, obstacles, and regulatory requirements. Identify splice points, access points, and protection elements such as splice boxes or conduits. Ensure all necessary approvals and permits are obtained from relevant authorities . Prepare the installation team, tools, and machinery, and implement a safety plan including signaling and environmental precautions .

Handling and Offloading

Optical cables must be handled carefully to prevent mechanical damage. Offload cable drums in an open area using lifting equipment rated for the drum weight. Always use lifting slings at a 45° angle and avoid standing directly under lifted drums . Keep the cable clean and avoid dropping or dragging reels, which can compromise structural integrity .

Laying the Cable

  • Outdoor or aerial installation: Use poles, trays, or conduits to support the cable. Maintain proper tension and avoid sagging. Ensure the cable is clear of power lines and other hazards .
  • Direct-buried installation: Excavate trenches, lay the cable carefully, and backfill with protective material. Avoid sharp bends and kinks .
  • Indoor installation: Route cables through conduits or trays, respecting minimum bend radius and fire safety codes. Avoid tight bends and excessive pulling tension . Use the figure-8 pattern when pulling cable from reels to prevent twisting and kinking. Each loop should be slightly offset to minimize mechanical stress . Never exceed the manufacturer's recommended pulling tension or bend radius.

Splicing and Termination

Terminate cable ends with appropriate connectors and perform splicing at designated points. Use splice boxes or enclosures to protect connections. Ensure all splices are clean and properly aligned to minimize insertion loss .

Testing and Verification

After installation, perform optical loss testing using an Optical Loss Test Set (OLTS) to measure insertion loss and verify signal integrity. For multimode fiber, test at 850 nm; for single-mode fiber, test at 1310 nm and 1550 nm. Clean connectors and re-test if readings exceed acceptable limits .

Safety Considerations

Wear safety glasses to protect against fiber shards during cleaving and termination. Avoid touching eyes or skin with fiber fragments. Follow all site safety protocols and environmental measures .

Maintenance and Supervision

Supervise cable installation continuously to ensure compliance with specifications. After installation, check for proper tension, secure clamping, and absence of damage. Document the installation for future maintenance and troubleshooting . By following these steps, optical cables can be installed safely and efficiently, ensuring long-term network performance and reliability.
