A distribution box organizes and safely distributes electricity through main switches, circuit breakers, busbars, neutral and earth connections, and protective devices.

Main Components and Wiring

Main Switch / Main MCB: The incoming power supply (phase and neutral) is first connected to the main switch, usually a double-pole MCB for single-phase systems. This acts as the primary disconnect for the entire system, allowing all power to be turned off during maintenance or emergencies . RCCB / RCD: The output of the main MCB is connected to an RCCB (Residual Current Circuit Breaker) or RCD, which protects against leakage currents, electrical shocks, and insulation faults. The RCCB's output then feeds the branch circuit breakers . Each MCB protects its respective circuit from overloads and short circuits . Busbars: Copper busbars distribute power efficiently from the main switch to all branch breakers. A comb busbar is often used to connect multiple breakers safely, reducing the need for multiple individual wires . Neutral and Earth Links: The neutral wires from all circuits are connected to a neutral bar, while all earth wires are connected to an earth bar. This ensures proper return paths and grounding for safety .

Wiring Practices

  • Neat Cable Management: Wires should be organized and secured to prevent tangling and overheating .
  • Correct Wire Gauge: Use wires rated for the load of each circuit to prevent overheating or voltage drops .
  • Proper Insulation: Ensure all connections are insulated and terminals are tightened to avoid arcing .
  • Labeling: Each breaker and wire should be labeled for easy identification and maintenance .

  • Install the distribution box in a dry, accessible area with good ventilation, typically around 1.5 meters above the floor .
