Single-mode fiber (SMF) is a fiber optic cable designed to carry a single light mode, enabling high-speed, long-distance data transmission with minimal signal loss.

Overview

Single-mode fiber cables have a small core diameter of approximately 8–10 µm, which allows only one mode of light to propagate at a time. This design reduces modal dispersion, minimizing signal attenuation and enabling data transmission over long distances at high speeds, typically using wavelengths of 1310 nm and 1550 nm. SMF is commonly used for telecommunications, internet, cable TV, and long-haul networks .
