How to configure IP settings on a mobile fiber optic router

To configure a mobile fiber optic connection, connect your router to the ONT, access the router's admin panel, set the WAN type (often PPPoE), input ISP credentials, and configure LAN IP and Wi-Fi settings for secure, optimized performance.

Step 1: Physical Connection

  1. Install the Optical Network Terminal (ONT): Connect the fiber optic cable from the wall outlet to the ONT. Power it on and wait for the status lights to stabilize (usually 2–5 minutes) .
  2. Connect the Router: Use an Ethernet cable to link the ONT's LAN/WAN port to your router's WAN port. Ensure the router is powered on and ready .

Step 2: Access Router Admin Panel

  1. Open a web browser on a device connected to the router.
  2. Enter the router's default IP address (commonly 192.168.1.1 or 192.168.0.1) in the address bar .
  3. Log in using the default credentials (often admin/admin) or the credentials provided by your ISP or router documentation .

Step 3: Configure WAN/Internet Settings

  1. Select WAN Connection Type: Most fiber connections use PPPoE. If required, input the username and password provided by your ISP .
  2. Access Number/Connection Identifier: Some ISPs may require an access number (Zugangsnummer) or connection ID. If not provided, contact your ISP for these details .
  3. IP Address Assignment: Choose Dynamic IP (DHCP) if your ISP automatically assigns an IP, or Static IP if your ISP provides a fixed IP address .

Step 4: Configure LAN and IP Settings

  1. Navigate to LAN settings in the router panel.
  2. Set the router's IP address and subnet mask. Ensure the IP is within your network range and does not conflict with other devices .
  3. Optionally, configure DHCP server settings to automatically assign IP addresses to connected devices.

Step 5: Wi-Fi and Security Settings

  1. Set a network name (SSID) and a strong password.
  2. Choose a secure encryption type, preferably WPA3 or WPA2 .
  3. Update the router firmware to the latest version to ensure security and performance .

Step 6: Test and Troubleshoot

  1. Connect a device via Wi-Fi or Ethernet and check for internet access.
  2. Run a speed test to verify fiber performance.
  3. If the connection fails, reboot the ONT and router, verify cables, and confirm ISP activation .

Tips for Optimal Performance

  • Place the router centrally to maximize Wi-Fi coverage.
  • Avoid bending or damaging fiber optic cables.
  • Regularly update firmware and change passwords to maintain security . By following these steps, your mobile fiber optic connection should be fully operational, with proper IP configuration and secure router settings.
