Overview

A fiber optic sensor is a device that uses optical fiber either as the sensing element (intrinsic) or to transmit signals from a remote sensor to processing electronics (extrinsic) . These sensors measure physical quantities such as temperature, pressure, strain, vibration, displacement, torque, and acceleration by detecting changes in light properties like intensity, phase, polarization, wavelength, or transit time . They are widely used in industrial, structural, and safety applications due to their small size, flexibility, and ability to operate without electrical power at the sensing point .

Working Principle

Fiber optic sensors operate by transmitting light from a source through an optical fiber to a sensing element, which modulates the light based on the measured parameter. The modulated light is then detected and converted into an electronic signal for analysis . The optical fiber consists of a core and cladding with different refractive indices, allowing light to propagate through total internal reflection. Changes in the environment, such as strain or temperature, alter the light's properties, which are detected by the sensor system .

Types of Fiber Optic Sensors

  1. Intrinsic Sensors: The sensing occurs within the fiber itself. Environmental changes directly affect the light traveling through the fiber, enabling distributed sensing over long distances .
  2. Extrinsic Sensors: The fiber transmits light to and from an external sensing element. The fiber acts as a communication medium rather than the sensing element .
  3. Hybrid Sensors: Combine intrinsic and extrinsic principles for specialized applications . Fiber optic sensors can also be categorized by configuration:
  • Thru-beam: Separate transmitter and receiver.
  • Reflective: Single unit with parallel, coaxial, or separate fiber arrangements .
