Single-Mode Fiber

Single-mode fiber has a very narrow core, typically around 8–10 micrometers in diameter, allowing only a single spatial mode of light to propagate. This design minimizes modal dispersion, enabling extremely high bandwidth and long-distance transmission, often used in telecommunications, submarine cables, and long-haul networks . Dual-Mode / Multimode Fiber

This makes it easier to couple light from LEDs or VCSELs and reduces equipment costs . However, modal dispersion limits the effective transmission distance, making multimode fiber ideal for short-range applications such as within buildings, data centers, or campus networks . Multimode fibers are classified into types like OM1, OM2, OM3, OM4, and OM5, with higher OM numbers supporting higher bandwidth and longer distances .

Single vs Dual Fiber Modules
