Understanding PD Load on a PoE Switch

A Powered Device (PD), such as an IP phone, wireless access point, or camera, receives DC power from a Power Sourcing Equipment (PSE), typically a PoE switch. The switch allocates power to each PD based on the IEEE 802.3af, 802.3at, or 802.3bt standards, which define maximum power per port: 12.95 W for 802.3af, 25.5 W for 802.3at (PoE+), and up to 90 W for 802.3bt Type 4 devices .

Power Negotiation and Classification

When a PD is connected, the switch performs a detection and classification process: it sends a low-voltage signal to detect the PD and measures the resistance to confirm compatibility. The PD then communicates its power requirements through Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP) or IEEE classification. The switch initially allocates the maximum required power, then adjusts based on negotiation to ensure the PD operates efficiently without exceeding the switch's total power budget .

PDs are classified into power classes (0–4), which determine the maximum power they can draw. For example, Class 0 devices draw 0.44–12.95 W, Class 3 devices draw 6.49–12.95 W, and higher classes under 802.3bt can draw up to 90 W .

Minimum Load Requirements

PoE switches require PDs to draw a minimum current to maintain power. If a PD draws less than approximately 10 mA for a specified period, the switch may cut off power to prevent false detection or misallocation. This is important for devices with power-on/off functions or low standby consumption .

PoE Pass-Through and Redundancy

Some switches can act as both PD and PSE, known as PoE pass-through switches. These switches can receive power via PoE on designated PD ports while supplying power to other devices on PSE ports. Proper power budget calculations are critical to ensure all connected devices receive sufficient power without overloading the switch .
