How to wire a smart meter in a power distribution cabinet

Smart meters in power distribution cabinets must be wired following standardized phase identification, CT/VT connections, proper cable management, and secure enclosure practices to ensure safety, accuracy, and regulatory compliance.

Meter Enclosure and Placement

Smart meters should be installed in GRP enclosures with IP65/IP66 ratings for outdoor or main LV rooms, ensuring accessibility for maintenance and meter reading (ADDC Guidelines). For villas or restricted buildings, the enclosure is typically mounted on the boundary wall. Metering equipment must not be installed inside shops, offices, or warehouses, and multiple meters from different transformers should not share a single enclosure .

Wiring and Connection Practices

  • Phase Sequence and Color Coding: Maintain correct phase sequence and color codes for all cables to prevent miswiring .
  • CT/VT Integration: For CT-operated meters, bootlegs are used to connect CT leads to meter terminals. CTs and VTs must be properly certified and installed inside the MDB or SMDB for high-rise or large service points .
  • Cable Management: Dress all metering cables neatly using standard wire legs, and ensure both ends are glanded at the panel and meter enclosure to prevent mechanical stress and ingress of dust or moisture .
  • Breaker and Spare Load Management: Spare breakers and future load connections in MDB/SMDB must be padlocked with proper tags, and keys stored in a lockable key box inside the electrical room .

Safety and Verification

  • Power Off During Installation: Always turn off line power before connecting or disconnecting meters, and verify voltage absence to prevent electric shock .
  • Labeling: Each meter and associated equipment must be permanently labeled with the premise identification number, including the main entrance, breaker, and cables .
  • Inspection: Licensed contractors must be present during inspection, installation, and activation, and provide the final approved Single Line Diagram (SLD) and meter schedule .

Additional Considerations

  • No Sub-Metering for Billing Meters: Sub-metering is not allowed if the main meter is used for billing purposes .
  • Space Allocation: Only distributor and meter operator equipment should occupy the meter enclosure; additional customer equipment should not restrict access or violate space requirements .
  • Smart Meter Communication: Modern smart meters may include PLC or RF modules for data transmission, which should be integrated without interfering with power connections . Following these wiring methods ensures accurate metering, compliance with utility standards, and safe operation of smart meters in power distribution cabinets.
