How to turn a cable tray

Cable trays can be rotated or turned either physically on-site using bends and couplers, or in design software by mirroring or section adjustments.

Physical Rotation and Bending

To change the direction of a cable tray on-site, you can use pre-fabricated bends, tees, or risers, or create custom bends with tools like a bolt cutter for wire mesh trays. The bolt cutter allows you to make live bends at the project site, forming a protective zinc layer on the cut ends to maintain corrosion resistance. After cutting, rubber caps can be used to protect sharp edges and ensure safety during installation . For standard metal ladder or perforated trays, you can also use splice plates and couplers to join sections at the desired angle. Always ensure that the tray is properly supported at intervals specified by the manufacturer (typically every 1.5–2 meters) and that the tray remains level after rotation .

Software-Based Rotation

In modeling software like Autodesk Revit, you cannot directly place a cable tray upside down. However, you can mirror the tray in a section view to achieve a 180-degree rotation. Be aware that after trimming or copying, the tray may revert to its default orientation, so careful placement and repeated mirroring may be necessary. For complex situations, using a model-in-place version can provide more control over orientation .

Safety and Planning

  • Plan the route: Identify bends, elevation changes, and support points before making adjustments .
  • Use proper PPE: Gloves, safety glasses, and a hard hat are essential when handling trays .
  • Check regulations: Ensure compliance with local electrical codes regarding tray fill ratios and support spacing .
  • Secure connections: Use hold-down clips or bolts to prevent trays from sliding after rotation . By combining proper planning, the right tools, and careful handling, you can safely turn or rotate cable trays both physically and in design models.
