How to make a cold connector for home fiber optic cables

A cold connector (mechanical fiber optic connector) allows quick, tool-free termination of fiber cables by inserting the prepared fiber into a pre-polished connector with a mechanical splicing mechanism.

What You Need

  • Fiber optic cold connector (pre-polished, factory-installed ferrule)
  • Fiber stripper
  • Fiber cleaver or precision cutter
  • Fiber cleaning tools (isopropyl alcohol, lint-free wipes)
  • Optional: connector boot or protective sleeve

Step-by-Step Guide

  1. Prepare the Cable
    • Slide the connector boot onto the fiber cable if included.
    • Strip the outer jacket of the fiber cable using a fiber stripper to expose the bare fiber.
    • Remove the acrylate coating carefully to avoid damaging the glass core.
  2. Clean the Fiber
    • Wipe the bare fiber with isopropyl alcohol and a lint-free wipe to remove dust and oils.
    • Ensure the fiber is completely dry before proceeding.
  3. Cut the Fiber
    • Use a fiber cleaver or precision cutter to make a clean, 90-degree cut on the fiber end.
    • The quality of this cut is critical for low signal loss and proper connector performance.
  4. Insert the Fiber into the Connector
    • Open the mechanical splicing mechanism (usually a V-groove with a wedge clamp) on the cold connector.
    • Slowly insert the prepared fiber into the connector until it reaches the pre-polished ferrule.
    • Ensure the fiber is fully seated without bending or stressing it.
  5. Lock the Fiber
    • Press the clamping mechanism or gland to secure the fiber in place.
    • Remove any wedge or temporary clamp used to guide the fiber.
  6. Finish the Installation
    • Slide the connector boot over the connector to protect the fiber and provide strain relief.
    • Avoid removing the dust cap until the connector is ready to be connected to equipment.
